Best kept secret: The Napier Hotel

The Napier Hotel

Every second Friday at work the cleaning man comes. So every second Friday my Boss, Miss A and I make ourselves scarce by going out for lunch (this usually works well as it is also pay day!). We always struggle to think of where to go with so many great options, but last Friday we decided to visit the Napier Hotel, just a 2 minute walk from the office.

The place is a gem: a classic Fitzroy pub. Unpretentious and serving up good quality pub food, I feel a little guilty for revealing this local secret. But I will.

I ordered the classic 1/2 roast chicken from the specials board, complete with roast vege and gravy, though it was given the more fancy title of “jus” ($19.00). An amazing amount of quality food for an equally amazing price. The chicken was tender, perfectly seasoned with a deep bronzed skin, and the roast potatoes perfectly turned. The brocolli and beans added some nice greenery and were also cooked perfectly.

My boss also ordered from the specials board, opting instead for the curry chicken served with roti and pappadam, yoghurt and rice ($19.00). It looked amazing, and I must admit, I had a case of food envy..

Miss A chose the mushroom fettucini, which looked homemade ($18.00). Great lashings of parmesan finished the dish perfectly.

Yes I may be in trouble with the locals for revealing this place, but I couldn’t not. I was amazed with the quality of the food. They also have a good selection of beer and wine, and would make an excellent place for a casual meal or just a drink after work. Well worth a visit if you’re in the area.
