Welcome back with Dozo

Ok, so I know this isn’t the amazing Thailand food blog I promised earlier.. But the photos we took on our trip are on Bonnie’s iPhone, and she’s in Brisbane this week. So to tide you over, here’s a review of the meal I had with my family as a welcome home!

I think I should let you all know I love Japanese food. I love the freshness of it and I never feel too heavy after. Dozo is a family favourite as it is right at the bottom of our street and always serves up good food. The service, however, was extremely slow the night we visited, which Sister-A said was the same case when she had visited previously. We did not receive any food until after half an hour of being in the restaurant, which I considered slow given there with only 4 other tables occupied.

When the food did arrive, I was a little disappointed with the miso eggplant we’d ordered as an entree, as it wasn’t as good as it had been in the past. The miso did not permeate through the flesh of the eggplant, but rather sat atop it as a sauce. Still, I ate it happily.

Our other entrees included wasabi beef, and gyoza (a double serve of 8, of course, as my family is mad for gyoza since Mum introduced us to it a few years back). The wasabi beef was deliciously tender, but could have done with a little more punch from the wasabi. I also wasn’t a fan of the skin of the gyoza (it was a bit rubbery), but the mince meat filling was delicious.

Next up, we had a few serves of sushi, chosen by Sister-A. She chose some prawn rolls, some salmon Calafornia rolls, as well as a serve of mixed nigiri. These took a while to come as they were made fresh to order, but were delicious when they arrived.

I was positively starving by the time our mains arrived, close to two hours after we arrived. We chose a beef dish similar to teriyaki beef, as well as a fried tofu dish with mixed vegetables. The beef again was tender and delicious, but the real find was the tofu. It was so flavourful, delicious and tender, and with the vegetables accompanying it, was probably my favourite dish of the night.

While the service was a bit slow (there was only 1 waitress for the entire place, be it only 4 tables) the food was delicious and well priced. We ordered fairly light for the 5 of us though, so I would probably suggest another main. Good for a semi-special occasion (like returning from Thailand), or a catch-up meal.
