As a resident of Camberwell, I have long asked myself: why can’t someone open a decent, trendy (I hate that word but I can’t think of a better one) cafe in Camberwell? Well, someone has finally heard me; Collective Expresso opened it’s doors last year and has been doing a roaring trade ever since. I have tried on a few occasions to go for breakfast on the weekend, but it is always too packed! So Bf- B and I have started going before work when we are almost guaranteed a seat at 8am..
On this particular occasion, I ordered from the special’s board: Zucchini Fritters with salami (which I changed to salmon), spinach and a poached egg ($12.00). I’m a sucker for zucchini fritters as you can see from my trip to Liar Liar.
The fritters were great except for one thing: they had macadamia nuts through them which I found totally unnecessary and out of place in the otherwise fluffy fritters. The salmon, however, was cured in-house and was beautifully soft, while the poached egg was cooked perfectly (though I would have liked 2 of them!).
Bf-B opted for his usual poached eggs with avocado, feta and EVOO. Not as good on this occasion as usual, due to not enough olive oil and seasoning in the avocado, but still Bf-B took his time enjoying every bite as he read the paper.
We were suitably late for work that day but I’d do it again! On previous occasions, I have gone for the scrambled eggs with 3 kinds of mushrooms cooked in truffle oil, and spinach (total perfection). Coffee, I think, is good, although Bf-B doesn’t find it strong enough (even when he asks for it strong!). Collective Expresso is definitely becoming our favourite weekday-morning habit..
