As if having Friends of Mine, Porgie & Mr Jones, Snow Pony AND Mazzitelli wasn’t enough. Recently I discovered the latest venture for the Icke & Igby management group, The Stables of Como. Opened in July last year, The Stables inhabits the former stables of the Como House estate (hence the name).
Nestled amongst the picturesque setting of the Como House gardens, the place is small but quaint with a country kitchen aesthetic. The counter is lined with artfully arranged baked goods including melting moments, lemon slice, lamingtons, brownies, scones, and just about any other sweet your grandmother used to bake. ”I wanted to create those old tearoom days, when you couldn’t wait to finish the mains so you could eat dessert,” says one half of Icke & Igby, Jason M Jones.
If you’re a fan of the sister restaurants, you are sure to like this one. Reading the menu you may be struck with a case of déjà vu: the menu contains some of the group’s signature dishes such as the toasted banana bread with maple syrup mascarpone, fresh banana, berry compote and crushed pistachio ($16.90); the egg omelette with chevre and fresh herbs from the Como garden ($16.90); and of course the smashed avocado with thyme buttered mushrooms ($17.90) with the option of added poached eggs (19.90).
But like the other cafes, The Stables of Como menu has a few twists, such as the Tuna nicoise salad with seared tuna, green beans, potato, olives, tomato, smoky lemon vinaigrette and soft boiled egg (24.90), or the Roasted chermoula rubbed lamb loin, quinoa, smoked almonds, sumac and red grapes ($24.90). There’s also a good selection of piadini, baguettes and sandwiches on offer, including a club sandwich that deserves a mention ($12.90, with green salad $14.90, or chips $15.90).
While a heritage-listed house may not seem like the kind of place to visit for brunch in Melbourne, don’t let the quaint exterior fool you: this is serious food. With capable staff and a menu bang on trend, the template seems to be working for Icke & Igby. Soon they’ll have one on every corner like McDonalds.
